Variation level

High

Variation in stone refers to the differences in color, veining, and pattern within and between slabs of the same type of marble. This can be caused by natural variations in mineral content, impurities, and geological conditions during the stone’s formation.

ABRASION RESISTANCE SCALE

Moderate

This material has medium abrasion resistance, rating between 4-6 on the Mohs scale. While it can withstand moderate wear, exposure to sand and other abrasives may cause light scratching over time. The finish may gradually develop a patina. For countertop applications, always use a cutting board, and consider walk-off mats at entrances in flooring installations to protect the surface.

ABSORPTION SCALE

Moderate

This material has a low to moderate absorption rate. Always seal this material prior to use. To reduce the appearance of stains, always wipe up spills immediately. Oil and highly-pigmented liquids can penetrate and stain the stone and may need poultice to remove the stain.

ACID SENSITIVITY

High

This material is highly sensitive to acids. Acid etching can be quite noticeable and may affect the stone's appearance significantly, especially on lighter-colored and honed surfaces. The finish is likely to show signs of wear and patina over time. For environments where acid resistance is crucial, consider choosing a material with lower acid sensitivity.

FREEZE/THAW

Not recommended

This stone surface is not recommended for freeze-thaw applications due to its susceptibility to damage in extreme temperature changes. We suggest considering more suitable alternatives for outdoor or freezing environments.

Care and Maintenance for Marble, Granite, and Quartzite

To maintain the beauty of your stone surfaces, follow these guidelines for cleaning and care:

  1. Cleaning: Regular maintenance involves washing with clean, potable water and a neutral (pH-7) cleaner. Use “soapless” cleaners to minimize streaking and filming. Mild, phosphate-free dish soaps are acceptable if thoroughly rinsed. Wet the surface with clean, hot (not boiling) water, then wash with the cleaner solution, following the manufacturer’s instructions. For vertical surfaces, clean from bottom to top.
  2. Rinsing: Rinse thoroughly with clean, potable water to remove all soap residues. Change the rinse water frequently to avoid residue buildup and grout joint accumulation.
  3. Drying: Dry the surface with a soft cloth or cotton-flannel towel. For a streak-free finish, you may use chamois skin instead.

By adhering to these practices, you can keep your marble, granite, and quartzite surfaces looking pristine and extending their longevity.

MARBLE SEALERS

Stone sealers are specialized products designed to protect marbles and other surfaces from stains, moisture, and damage. They work by penetrating the porous surface of the marble to form a protective barrier that repels liquids and prevents them from seeping into the stone. Sealers are available in various formulations, including impregnating sealers (which penetrate the stone) and topical sealers (which form a protective film on the surface). Some sealers also enhance the natural color and veining of the marble.

Uses:

  1. Stain Protection: Sealers protect marble from spills and stains by preventing liquids such as oil, wine, and coffee from penetrating the stone. This is crucial for maintaining the appearance of countertops, floors, and other marble surfaces.
  2. Moisture Resistance: Marble sealers help reduce the absorption of water, which can cause damage such as warping or discoloration over time. This is especially important in high-humidity areas like bathrooms and kitchens.
